Hawk Earns Certified Merger and Acquisition Designation
05/14/2011
Kyle Hawk, CPA, CMAP, has successfully completed the certification process with the Middle Market Investment Banking Association (MMIBA) and its affiliate, the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA) to earn the Certified Merger and Acquisition Professional (CMAP) designation. The CMAP certification is conferred by MMIBA and administered by NACVA.

Mr. Hawk is the Managing Member of Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & and Loyd, LLC, (SJHL) a multi-faceted accounting firm, established in 1936 that offers a wide range of services to companies, individuals and organizations.

In his announcement, NACVA Chief Executive Officer, Parnell Black, MBA, CPA, CVA, noted, "The Certified Merger and Acquisition designation is an indication to the professional community that Mr. Hawk has met the Association's rigorous standards of professionalism, expertise, objectivity and integrity in the field of mergers and acquisitions."

In addition to passing the comprehensive certification exam, requirements to earn the Certified Mergers and Acquisitions designation include holding a credential from a recognized institution demonstrating a high level of training and accomplishment in a field of business, finance, accounting, economics or business management and furnishing a number of professional references, among others.

To maintain his CMAP designation Mr. Hawk will be required to periodically obtain continuing professional education in areas related to the dynamic field of mergers and acquisitions.

"This CMAP designation is an impressive addition to Mr. Hawk's accomplishments and knowledge base," said Carver Swindoll, CPA, CVA, partner at SJHL. "Our firm is known for being imaginative, creative problem solvers and for our specialized training and credentials.  SJHL has extensive experience in providing consulting services related to mergers and acquisitions.  This certification clearly differentiates us as experts in this area," added Swindoll.

The middle market is made up of businesses with revenues of between $2 million and $500 million with values ranging from $4 million to $1 billion and middle market businesses comprise about 18% of all US businesses but represent about 90% of all merger and acquisition transactions. "Our focus is on the lower end of the middle market- on companies valued between $2 and $100 million," said Hawk. "Our skill set and experience make us perfectly suited to serve these companies that are way too small for Wall Street or large investment banks. The M & A activity level in the lower middle market has been strong over the past several years, but significant increases in activity levels are expected over the next 5 to 10 years as the Baby Boomer business exit hits full stride, the consolidation of many industries continues, and technology and information continue to drive change and innovation. We are uniquely suited to play a major role in this exciting and dynamic process," added Hawk.

SJHL Firm-Wide Summit
07/11/2011
Kyle, Scot, Sue, Luke, Carol and Sarah listing their greatest achievements.Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC spent two days last week focusing on our strategic plan for the coming year in a firm-wide summit. The summit was hosted at the Opera House and was facilitated by Sandra Wiley with Boomer Consulting out of Manhattan, KS. Boomer Consulting specializes in consulting for accounting firms and SJHL has had a great working relationship with them for many years. Some might call this planning session a retreat, but as Wiley put it, the word "retreat" sounds like you are going backwards. On the other hand, the word "summit" has been defined as, "the highest attainable level of achievement," which is what we want for ourselves and our clients. Although we did discuss some of our past achievements, both personally and firm-wide, most conversations revolved around where we want to go and how we are going to get there.

Sandra Wiley discussing our objectives.
Each staff member attended the summit and were encouraged to offer opinions and ideas for the coming year. SJHL revisited our core values, objectives, vision statement, mission statement and goals, then made adjustments where necessary. We discussed the needs of the firm, each staff member, and most importantly, the needs of our clients. We  are constantly looking for how best to service our clients, and this summit was another example of how SJHL is "More Than Just Numbers."

We look forward to growing with you and implementing our new ideas. Providing our clients great value in the services we offer, as well as in the way we offer them, is something we have taken very seriously over the past 75 years, and will continue to do so in the coming years. Visit http://www.sjhl.com/services.php to learn more about how we can assist you personally or in your business, or give us a call at (620) 241-1826 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              (620) 241-1826      end_of_the_skype_highlighting and we are happy to answer any questions.

100 Years…and Counting
07/22/2011
Congratulations to McPherson Concrete Products, Co.! This year marks the company's one hundred year anniversary. McPherson Concrete Products began in 1911 when Lambert Anderson, a farmer, built a silo using concrete staves rather than the traditional redwood staves. One hundred years later, the company is one of the largest builders of commercial grain structures in the Midwest and is still family owned and operated by Lambert's grandson Chris Anderson. Many other family members are also still involved with the business. Learn more about McPherson Concrete Products' history at http://www.mcphersonconcrete.com/aboutus.htm.

Chris attributes McPherson Concrete Products' success to his grandfather and father's vision and their perseverance, as well as the company's wonderful employees. He stated, "I am lucky to be surrounded by such a good bunch. They 'get it,' and have really gotten the job done these past 20 to 30 years."

Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC is proud to work with great people and businesses, like McPherson Concrete Products, Co., that evolve and continue to grow and be successful. Cheers to the next hundred years! www.sjhl.com

2011 Dirty Dozen
07/31/2011
The annual IRS list of the most notorious tax scams, the "Dirty Dozen," has been released. (See IRS News Release IR-2011-39 .) "The Dirty Dozen represents the worst of the worst tax scams," IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said. "Don't fall prey to these tax scams. They may look tempting, but these fraudulent deals end up hurting people who participate in them."

2011 Dirty Dozen

Without further ado, the following dastardly deeds make-up the IRS's 2011 dirty dozen:

1. Hiding Income Offshore . Individuals continue to try to avoid paying U.S. taxes by illegally hiding income in off-shore bank and brokerage accounts or using offshore debit cards, credit cards, wire transfers, foreign trusts, employee leasing schemes, private annuities, or insurance plans. The IRS, state, and U.S. possession tax agencies aggressively pursue taxpayers and promoters of these scams. In early February, the IRS announced a second voluntary disclosure initiative available through 8/31/11 designed to bring offshore money back into the U.S. tax system and help people with undisclosed income from hidden offshore accounts get current with their taxes.

2. Identity Theft and Phishing. Identity theft occurs when someone uses an unsuspecting individual's name, Social Security number, credit card number, or other personal information without permission to commit fraud or other crimes, such as using someone else's personal information to file a fraudulent tax return and collect a refund. Phishing is a tactic used by scam artists to trick unsuspecting victims into revealing personal or financial information, usually by promising a tax refund if the victim provides this information. IRS impersonation schemes can take the form of emails, tweets, or phony websites.

Note: Warn clients not to open any attachments or click on any links in suspicious emails claiming to be from the IRS. Also, the IRS requests that suspicious emails and Web addresses that do not begin with http://www.irs.gov be forwarded to the IRS mailbox: phishing@irs.gov . Clients who believe their personal information has been stolen and used for tax purposes should immediately contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 1-800-908-4490.

3. Return Preparer Fraud. Dishonest preparers cause many problems for taxpayers falling victim to their schemes. Such preparers derive financial gain by skimming a portion of their clients' refunds and charging inflated fees for return preparation services. They attract new clients by promising large refunds. The IRS is implementing a number of steps for future filing seasons aimed at thwarting such dishonest deeds. These include requiring all paid tax return preparers to register with the IRS and obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), as well as both competency tests and ongoing continuing professional education for any paid tax return preparer who isn't an attorney, CPA, or enrolled agent.

4. Filing False or Misleading Forms. This tactic is used by scam artists who file false or misleading returns to claim refunds they are not entitled to receive. Frivolous information returns, such as Form 1099-OID (Original Issue Discount), claiming false withholding credits are used to legitimize erroneous refund claims.

5. Frivolous Arguments. Frivolous scheme promoters encourage people to make unreasonable and unfounded claims to avoid paying taxes. The IRS has a list of frivolous legal positions that taxpayers should avoid (search for "The Truth About Frivolous Tax Arguments" on www.irs.gov .)

6. Reporting Nontaxable Social Security Benefits with Excessive Withholding. The IRS is finding returns where taxpayers report nontaxable social security benefits with excessive withholding. This tactic increases withholding but not taxable income, thus inflating the taxpayer's refund. Often both the withholding amount and the reported income are incorrect. The IRS warns that this indiscretion can result in a $5,000 penalty.

7. Abuse of Charitable Organizations and Deductions. Misuses of tax-exempt organizations include arrangements to improperly shield income or assets from taxation, attempts by donors to maintain control over donated assets or income from donated property, and overvaluation of contributed property. Often, the donations are highly overvalued or the organization receiving the donation promises that the donor can purchase the items back at a later date at a price the donor sets.

8. Abusive Retirement Plans . The IRS continues to uncover abuses in retirement plan arrangements, including Roth IRAs. It is looking for transactions that taxpayers use to avoid the limits on IRA contributions (such as, shifting appreciated assets into IRAs or companies owned by their IRAs at less than fair market value), as well as transactions that are not properly reported as early distributions.

9. Disguised Corporate Ownership . Domestic shell corporations and other entities are formed and operated in certain states to disguise ownership of a business or financial activity. Such entities can be used to under-report income, claim fictitious deductions, avoid the filing of tax returns, or participate in listed transactions, money laundering, financial crimes, and even terrorist financing. The IRS is working with state authorities to identify these entities and bring their owners into compliance.

10. Zero Wages. Filing a phony wage-related or income-related information return to replace a legitimate information return has been used as an illegal method to lower the amount of taxes owed. Typically, a Form 4852 (Substitute Form W-2) or a "corrected" Form 1099 is used as a way to improperly reduce taxable income to zero. The taxpayer also may submit a statement rebutting wages and taxes reported by a payer to the IRS. The IRS warns that this scheme can result in a $5,000 penalty.

11. Misuse of Trusts . Unscrupulous promoters have urged taxpayers to transfer assets into trusts, promising reduction of income subject to tax, deductions for personal expenses, and reduced estate or gift taxes. However, some trusts don't deliver as promised. The IRS has recently seen an increase in the improper use of private annuity trusts and foreign trusts to divert income and deduct personal expenses.

12 . Fuel Tax Credit Scams. The IRS is receiving unreasonable claims for the fuel tax credit. Some taxpayers, such as farmers who use fuel for off-road business purposes, may be eligible for the credit. But, others are claiming the credit for nontaxable uses of fuel when their occupation or income level makes the claim unreasonable. Fraud involving the credit can result in a $5,000 penalty.

Conclusion

Tax professionals should counsel taxpayers to steer clear of these schemes and take steps to remedy the situation for any client involved in one. Suspected tax fraud can be confidentially reported to the IRS using Form 3949-A (Information Referral) available at www.irs.gov.

SJHL Goes Underground
09/01/2011
SJHL Staff and Family

On Saturday, August 27th, members of Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd's staff, their spouses and friends were sent underground to try and solve a murder during the Kansas Underground Salt Museum's semi-annual Murder in the Mine dinner theater presentation of "Clue-less."

After they were outfitted with hard hats and rescuers, the group descended 650 feet underground via a hoist that took them on a minute and a half ride to the bottom. The mine's salt veins stretch from Kansas all the way to New Mexico and it is the only salt museum of its kind in America. The group was allowed to visit the gift shop, tour the galleries and view Underground Vaults and Storage's exhibit that includes antique trains, movie props and original film that is preserved underground.

The theatre production was based on the board game "Clue" and dinner guests were drawn into the plot by playing different parts. At the end of the meal, guests had to try and figure out who committed the murder. Was it Miss Scarlet in the Ballroom with a rope or Professor Plum in the library with a knife?

The Kansas Underground Salt Mine is located at 3504 East Avenue G at Airport Road in Hutchinson. The next dinner theater event will take place in February 2012. Check their website at www.undergroundmuseum.org/special-events.html for more information.

SJHL Staff Member on Tour with U.S. Senator
09/02/2011
Chad and Cassondra Basinger with Senator Pat Roberts
On Wednesday, August 24th, United States Senator Pat Roberts went on a "Drought Tour" in Kingman and Reno counties. Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd's Cassondra Basinger was one of fifty area farmers and agricultural officials from the state of Kansas who participated in this bus tour to see first-hand what our current drought has done to crops. Cassondra's husband Chad Basinger was selected as the official tour guide of the event. Chad and Cassondra run a farm in the Pretty Prairie area where they grow wheat, milo and soybeans and also have a cow calf operation.
Senator Roberts was in town for the 2012 Farm Bill Hearing that took place in Wichita on Thursday, August 25th, where the main topic of conversation was budget cuts and how they could affect crop insurance. Roberts wanted to see the devastation the drought has caused before attending the hearing. Basinger's husband pointed out different areas affected by the drought including irrigated corn, which has now been chopped for silage; Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), that has been hayed or able to be grazed for livestock; alfalfa that produced a fraction of its normal output; among many other affected crops.
Basinger with Senator Roberts
This drought and high temperatures have caused producers to lose approximately $1.6 billion. The federal crop insurance program is critical to Kansas agriculture. The current drought is a harsh reminder of how farmers truly depend on it. About 400 people attended the 2012 Farm Bill Hearing, including Senator Roberts, Governor Sam Brownback and many area farmers.

Cassondra and Chad were very excited to spend time with Sen. Roberts, but the circumstances were less than desirable. There are many elements that can affect any business, and farmers are all to aware of this. It is important to assess any possible foreseen risk that could affect you or your business and be prepared. Crop insurance is considered to be the most important safety net for producers.

SJHL encourages participation in the United Way by offering employees an easy way to make donations through payroll. A couple of dollars per paycheck can add up and help with all of the great programs the United Way helps fund. Some of these programs are Big Brothers Big Sisters, STEPMC, Summer Lunch Program, Preschool Scholarships, YMCA, Special Olympics and the 2nd Grade Learn to Swim Program. Taylor Bruce, daughter of SJHL's Kala Bruce, also spoke at the luncheon to provide more details about the 2nd Grade Learn to Swim Program. Taylor, now a 4th grader at Eisenhower Elementary, talked about what she took away from her experience of being in the Program and the important skills she learned.

Recently Married?
09/26/2011

If you recently got married or are planning a wedding, the last thing on your mind is taxes. However, there are some important steps you need to take to avoid stress at tax time. Here are seven tips for newlyweds.

1. Notify the Social Security Administration: Report any name change to the Social Security Administration so your name and Social Security number will match when you file your next tax return. File a Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card, at your local SSA office. The form is available on SSA's website at www.ssa.gov, by calling 800-772-1213 or at local offices.

2. Notify the IRS if you move: If you have a new address you should notify the IRS by sending Form 8822, Change of Address. You may download Form 8822 from www.IRS.gov or order it by calling 800–TAX–FORM (800–829–3676).

3. Notify the U.S. Postal Service: You should also notify the U.S. Postal Service when you move so it can forward any IRS correspondence or refunds.

4. Notify your employer: Report any name and address changes to your employer(s) to make sure you receive your Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, after the end of the year.

5. Check your withholding: If both you and your spouse work, your combined income may place you in a higher tax bracket. You can use the IRS Withholding Calculator available on www.irs.gov to assist you in determining the correct amount of withholding needed for your new filing status. The IRS Withholding Calculator will give you the information you need to complete a new Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate. You can fill it out and print it online and then give the form to your employer(s) so they withhold the correct amount from your pay.

6. Select the right tax form: Choosing the right individual income tax form can help save money. Newly married taxpayers may find that they now have enough deductions to itemize on their tax returns. Itemized deductions must be claimed on a Form 1040, not a 1040A or 1040EZ.

7. Choose the best filing status: A person's marital status on Dec. 31 determines whether the person is considered married for that year. Generally, the tax law allows married couples to choose to file their federal income tax return either jointly or separately in any given year. Figuring the tax both ways can determine which filing status will result in the lowest tax, but usually filing jointly is more beneficial.

For more information about changing your name, address and income tax withholding visit www.irs.gov. IRS forms and publications can be obtained from www.irs.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676). Visit http://youtu.be/POEMoLMlcts to watch a short video.

The service that all clients are accustomed to and the people they work with will not change, although BSE's clients may notice some differences, such as a new firm name, email addresses, service offerings and faces at their Hutchinson office.SJHL values the relationships BSE has made and hopes that this growth will benefit Steve and Diane, as well as the clients of both firms.

"Working with SJHL will allow us to support the growing needs of our clients. BSE has served the Hutchinson area for more than 85 years and is committed to providing excellent service to their clients for years to come. Both firms are excited about what this opportunity will mean for their staff, clients and community.

"When any firm grows, your main concern is making sure your current clients are positively impacted by the changes. Our clients should be excited about this growth, as it means we can provide them with more resources, services and better overall advice. BSE has a strong presence in their community, and we are proud to work with them through this process. We have similar cultures that should make for an easy transition. BSE brings many years of experience to the table, and together, we are ready to continue our collective growth," said Hawk.

Maximize Your Tax Savings Before Year-End
10/14/2011

As we approach year-end, it's again time to focus on last-minute moves you can make to save taxes-both on your 2011 return and in future years. To get you started, we've included a few money-saving ideas here that you may want to put in action before the end of the year. Contact one of our tax specialists at (620) 241-1826 if you have questions about which ideas may be appropriate for you or if you want to discuss other tax-saving strategies.
  • For 2011, the standard deduction is $11,600 for married taxpayers filing joint returns and $5,800 for single taxpayers. These amounts will likely be about the same for 2012. If your total itemized deductions are normally close to theseamounts, you may be able to leverage the benefit of your deductions by bunching deductions in every other year. This allows you to time your itemized deductions so that they are high in one year and low in the next. For instance, you might consider moving charitable donations you normally would make in early 2012 to the end of 2011. If you're temporarily short on cash, charge the contribution to a credit card-it is deductible in the year charged, not when payment is made on the card. You can also accelerate payments of your real estate taxes or state income taxes otherwise due in early 2012. But, watch out for the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), as these taxes are not deductible for AMT purposes.
  • If you have appreciated stock that you've held more than a year and you plan to make significant charitable contributions before year-end, keep your cash and donate the stock (or mutual fund shares) instead. You'll avoid paying tax on the appreciation, but will still be able to deduct the donated property's full value. However, if the stock is now worth less than when you acquired it, sell the stock, take the loss, and then give the cash to the charity. If you give the stock to the charity, your charitable deduction will equal the stock's current depressed value and no capital loss will be available.
  • If you're age 70½, or older, you can arrange to transfer up to $100,000 of otherwise taxable IRA money to a charity. Such a transfer is federal-income-tax-free to you, but you don't get to claim a charitable deduction on your Form 1040. However, the tax-free treatment equates to a 100% write off, and you don't have to itemize your deductions to get it. Be careful-to qualify for this special tax break, the funds must be transferred directly from your IRA to the charity. Also, this favorable provision will expire at the end of this year unless Congress extends it. So, this could be your last chance.
  • Because of the roller-coaster stock market this year, you may have investments that are worth less than what you paid for them. If so, you may want to cut some of your losses before year-end to gain a tax benefit. Losses are normally deductible to the extent of any capital gains that you've realized this year, plus an additional $3,000 (or $1,500 for married individuals filing a separate return).
  • If you have a 401(k) plan at work, it's just about time to tell your company how much you want to set aside on a tax-free basis for next year. Contribute as much as you can stand, especially if your employer makes matching contributions. You give up "free money" when you fail to participate to the max for the match.
  • If it looks like you are going to owe income taxes for 2011, consider bumping up the Federal income taxes withheld from your paychecks now through the end of the year. When you file your return, you will still have to pay any taxes due less the amount paid in. However, penalties will be minimized, if not eliminated.
  • And finally, watch out for the AMT in all of your planning because what may be a great move for regular tax purposes may create or increase an AMT problem.

Row Row Row Your Boat
10/21/2011
Allison Tuxhorn in Oklahoma

The 1st Novice 8 boat from the Kansas State University rowing team brought home the gold October 2nd from Oklahoma City, OK. This was the last competition of the fall season, and they definitely finished strong. The team beat the boat that came in second by over a minute with a time of 15:00.932.

Although this does not relate to taxes or accounting in any way, it was a very exciting win for Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC. Allison Tuxhorn, the daughter of our very own Rick Tuxhorn, is on this first place winning team! Rick's wife Barb was able to watch the big win, while Rick was watching their youngest daughter Madison play volleyball. Needless to say, they have some very talented daughters.

SIMPLE IRA Plans - Employee Annual Notification Due November 2
10/27/2011

A Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees of Small Employers (SIMPLE) IRA plan allows eligible employees to defer salary and requires an employer to contribute each year. An employer with a SIMPLE IRA plan deposits employee salary deferrals and makes its required contributions to each employee's SIMPLE IRA.

Though it avoids the complex nondiscrimination testing essential to a traditional 401(k) plan, a SIMPLE IRA plan has other important administrative requirements. Perhaps most important is the employer's annual notice to participants.

Each year, an employer notifies participants of its contribution choice for the coming plan year and provides them with a 60-day salary-deferral election period. A financial organization serving as a SIMPLE IRA custodian/trustee is responsible for providing part of the content of this annual notice.

This article serves as a reminder of the SIMPLE IRA plan notice requirement and reviews the necessary content.

Timing

An employer must provide the notice to each SIMPLE IRA plan participant prior to a required 60-day election period. SIMPLE IRA plans are calendar year plans so the annual 60-day election period runs from November 2 through December 31.

When notifying an employee who enters a SIMPLE IRA plan during a plan year, an employer must provide a different 60-day election period. It must include the employee's first day of eligibility or the day before.

Content

An employer's SIMPLE IRA plan notice must contain:

  • A reminder of a participant's right to elect a new or modify an existing salary deferral or reduction agreement within the 60-day election period.

  • An announcement of the type and amount of the employer's contribution for the coming year.

  • A statement that a participant must establish a SIMPLE IRA with any SIMPLE IRA custodian/trustee he/she chooses and provide the location to the employer, if the employer established its SIMPLE IRA plan with IRS Form 5304-SIMPLE. For a SIMPLE IRA plan established with IRS Form 5305-SIMPLE, all employees must establish SIMPLE IRAs with the custodian/trustee chosen by the employer-the designated financial institution (DFI).

  • A Summary Description provided by each participant's SIMPLE IRA custodian/trustee. This is generally a copy of the current SIMPLE IRA plan document (IRS Form 5304-SIMPLE or IRS Form 5305-SIMPLE) together with the financial organization's current Procedures for Withdrawal. For plans established with Form 5305-SIMPLE, the Summary Description also includes the DFI's policy and procedures for transfers without cost or penalty of SIMPLE IRA plan contributions during the coming year.

An employer should begin collecting this information from each SIMPLE IRA custodian/trustee early enough to ensure delivery of the complete notice before November 2. A SIMPLE IRA custodian/trustee should start preparing its Summary Description and Procedures for Withdrawal as soon as possible to be ready for employers in late September or early October.

Not providing the notice could result in an employer-paid penalty of $50 per day until the employer provides the notice.

Guidance

For more information on SIMPLE IRA plan notice requirements, an employer should look to its SIMPLE IRA plan agreement (Form 5304-SIMPLE or Form 5305-SIMPLE). IRS Notice 98-4 also provides information on the annual notice requirements and much more information on the operation of a SIMPLE IRA plan. Click here to read Notice 98-4.

An employer should seek the guidance of a tax or legal professional to determine its best contribution choice for each plan year, in drafting its annual employee notice, and to ensure compliance with all SIMPLE IRA plan rules.

Call us at (620) 241-1826 if you have any questions. www.sjhl.com

Business Sense Runs in the Family
10/28/2011

Sweeties Cupcakes and Cook's Nook
Kellsie and Jonna Corrigan

When you ask most 7th graders what they want to do when they grow up, you don't usually get the answer, "I'm doing it!" Well if you asked McPherson Middle Schooler Kellsie Corrigan, that is exactly the answer you would get.

Pumpkin Spice, Cafe Mocha & Ice Cream SundaeAt 12 years, old Kellsie manages school, homework, swim team, a demanding gymnastics schedule and her own business. A year ago she started making cupcakes, and her hobby has now turned into "Sweeties Cupcakes." Working in the kitchen probably comes pretty natural, as her grandmother Priscilla is the owner of Cook's Nook in McPherson and her mother Jonna now manages the store.

What got Kellsie interested in cupcakes to begin with was her love for shows like "Cake Boss" and "Cupcake Wars." This inspired her to become a baking machine as she began testing different recipes she would find. Jonna said they got to the point where they had so many cupcakes around the house they HAD to start giving them away. People would love them and tell their friends, it began to snowball from there.

Kellsie's cupcakes are now available for purchase, but with her busy schedule she requests all orders be made at least a week in advance by phone. She understands that what she is doing is very special, but she also needs to be a kid and work hard in school. Kellsie has plans to go to college after high school, but has not quite decided what she wants to study. She does know that she wants to eventually open up her own cupcake store.

Cook's Nook - 219 N. Main St., McPherson, KS
Sweeties Cupcakes offers six (6) delicious flavors including red velvet, cookies and cream, pumpkin spice, peanut butter chocolate, cafe mocha and ice cream sundae. Kellsie says what makes her cupcakes so special is the fact that they are made completely from scratch. Jonna helps her with clean-up, but admits Kellsie keeps things pretty tidy when she bakes.

When Kellsie decided she wanted to make this a business, she was challenged by someone at Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC to prove it, and she has done just that. She designed top notch business cards, created a beautiful way to package them and even developed a website. For information on ordering and to view more pictures of her cupcakes, visit her website at http://sweetiescupcakesforyou.webs.com/, but keep in mind she is only one girl…with gymnastics three nights a week.

Kellsie's business sense must be genetic because Cook's Nook has been a staple of McPherson since 1988 when Priscilla opened its doors. At the time, her husband owned a pharmacy next door to her original location and he stayed open late, so this is why Cook's Nook is still open until 8:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. They are open until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and even open Sunday afternoons starting in November through Christmas.

What a lot of people don't know about the Cook's Nook is that they offer free gift wrapping as well as delivery for wedding registries. They will deliver to the church, reception or the bride and groom's home at no charge. You don't have to do a thing after you pick it out! Meet the staff and see a few of the nifty kitchen gadgets they carry at http://www.thecooksnookmcpherson.com/.

You Could be Wasting Time in QuickBooks
11/10/2011

If you or your business uses QuickBooks®, then chances are good you are missing opportunities to be more efficient in the program. On Tuesday, November 8th, Stephanie Thurman and Vicki Courtney from Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC presented QuickBooks: Tips & Tricks. This event was hosted by the McPherson Chamber of Commerce.

Chrissy Cox with Assured Occupational Solutions
During the two hour presentation, Stephanie and Vicki presented valuable short-cut keys and functions to use in QuickBooks®. Stephanie began by showing attendees how to customize the QuickBooks® Icon Bar.

"I never used the right side of my screen before, so getting rid of those icons I never use and adding icons I do use will be a nice time saver," stated attendee Chrissy Moran with Assured Occupational Solutions.

Another time saver discussed was QuickBooks® ability to download credit card and banking transactions, possibly eliminating hours of data entry.

Stephanie Thurman
A function that may benefit organizations is the use of class tracking. Vicki discussed class tracking in terms of payroll noting that company paid payroll taxes can also be allocated to classes automatically, if you have the correct setup in QuickBooks®. Moran also said that,"the payroll option to split the classes based on how you want the payroll allocated is very helpful."

Another important note was made regarding fraud and embezzlement. Embezzlement is far more common among small business owners than we like to think. The 2011 study done by Marquet International, Ltd. analyzed 485 embezzlement cases active in the United States in 2010. One significant finding from this study showed the most common embezzlement scheme involved the forgery or unauthorized issuance of company checks. Another finding was that two-thirds of the incidents reported were committed by employees who held finance and accounting positions.

SJHL suggests that one way to protect your business is to have the actual bank statements sent to the business owner's home address. The owner should open and review the bank statements each month making sure the checks cashed are the same information being recorded in QuickBooks®!

Preventative Care Important for Finances Too
11/17/2011

Chet Buchman

We still have a month or so before the New Year, but it is always a good time to discuss getting healthy. Right now you may be doing a mental checklist of what you ate today and how much you have exercised this week. Like most people, you are either feeling pretty proud of yourself or really guilty, and possibly figuring out ways to justify your bad diet. “The kids had ballgames four of the five nights this week.” Well you can stop blaming the kids and relax because I am talking about a different type of health, your business health. Now go through that checklist; what exactly are you evaluating? It is not near as easy as, “I walked two miles last night after three pieces of pizza, and so far today I have had a yogurt.”

Checking the health of your business is difficult for several reasons. To start, what does it even mean to have a healthy business? And what parameters are used to check it? When the word “healthy” is used you may think “profitable,” thus your business is healthy as a horse because you are profitable and you can move on with your day. Sorry to disappoint you, but making a profit is not the only “healthy” factor, although it is important. Dropping five pounds is great, but that does not necessarily make you healthy.

Does your spouse know what to do with the business if something were to happen to you tomorrow? If your answer is no, then your company may have high blood pressure. Do you know the costs associated with acquiring a new customer? If this is also a no, then your business may also have high cholesterol.

There are many “vitals” that you should look at annually, such as your own personal finances (yes these can affect your business if you are feeling cash-flow pressure at home), product pricing, performance metrics, succession planning, strategic initiatives, staffing, company morale, etc. Not all of these topics are easy conversations to have with your spouse, management team or even yourself, but all are necessary. “Doctor, I only have tightness in my chest when I go up a flight of stairs, and I only get headaches when I stare at the computer for too long.” It is easy to overlook these seemingly little things, but it is important to know the root causes of these symptoms and how each may affect the overall health, and ultimately the success, of your business.

Getting a check-up can do more than protect your business from potential risk. A check-up may shed light on other aspects of your business. Maybe you increase efficiencies by setting strategic initiatives or become more profitable by changing your pricing model. Any improvement to your business should help reduce stress and anxiety, which can significantly improve your quality of life.

Preventative care is important for you, your family and your business. Get a check-up even if you feel that everything is under control. With our economic climate constantly changing, it is in your best interest to visit a specialist yearly and make sure you have all of your bases covered. If you own a business, you have far more than money invested in it. You owe it to everyone involved to make sure it is in the best shape possible, improving your business health and your peace of mind.

Deductions for Heavy SUVs and Trucks
11/20/2011

As you probably know, the 2010 Tax Relief Act provided bigger depreciation deductions for business assets. In fact, under Section 179, businesses can expense up to $500,000 of depreciable business assets acquired during 2011, with any remaining basis fully deducted using the 100% bonus depreciation. Unfortunately, unfavorable depreciation rules apply to most passenger autos and light trucks used in business. For a vehicle acquired in 2011, depreciation deductions are generally limited to the following amounts:

New Cars
(With Bonus Depreciation)

Used Cars
(No Bonus Depreciation)

New Light Trucks and Vans
(With Bonus Depreciation)

Used Light trucks and Vans
(No Bonus Depreciation)

Year 1

$ 11,060

$ 3,060

$ 11,260

$ 3,260

Year 2

4,900

4,900

5,200

5,200

Year 3

2,950

2,950

3,150

3,150

Year 4 and thereafter

1,775

1,775

1,875

1,875

Of course, when a vehicle is used less than 100% for business, these figures are cut back even further. In fact, the average client may not live long enough to fully depreciate a really expensive car.

Exception for Heavy Trucks, Vans, and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs). These vehicles are not subject to the above limits. A truck, van, or SUV is "heavy" if it has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) (the manufacturer's maximum weight rating when loaded) above 6,000 pounds. Below, we've listed many of the 2012 vehicle models that qualify for these special tax benefits based on their GVWRs at the time we checked them. As you can see, it's a surprisingly long list. In addition, there may be some we have missed (new and retooled models are coming out all the time). Thus, always verify the GVWR for yourself before making a buying decision. The GVWR can normally be found on a label attached to the inside edge of the driver's side door.

If you buy such a vehicle in 2011 and use it more than 50% for business, you may be able to deduct the entire business portion of the vehicle's cost this year. For example, if before the end of the year you buy a new $65,000 heavy SUV that has a gross vehicle weight above 6,000 pounds and is used 100% for business, you may be able to deduct the entire $65,000 this year.

To claim these deductions, you must establish through contemporaneous records (such as, a mileage log) that you use the vehicle over 50% of the time for business. If your business usage later falls below 51%, a portion of the deductions previously claimed will need to be recaptured and reported as ordinary income in that year. Also, deductions allowable for used vehicles may be limited as such vehicles do not qualify for 100% bonus depreciation. Finally, this strategy works best if you are self-employed-claiming a Section 179 and bonus depreciation deductions for a heavy corporate-owned vehicle is much more difficult. Nevertheless, the heavy vehicle deductions can generate major tax savings given the right circumstances.

High Marks for Small Kansas Towns
11/28/2011

Most people in Kansas, and even all over the country, have heard about The Largest Ball of Sisal Twine that sits in Cawker City, Kansas. Although this is impressive, what you may not know about the area is even more amazing. Did you know that only 6 percent of ALL United States' school districts test better in math than other students in the developed world? And did you know that the Waconda School District is one of these 6 percent? Waconda won four Governor's Achievement Awards for 2010 because of its math and reading scores.

Cawker City, KS
The Waconda School District contains four towns in North Central Kansas; Cawker City, Downs, Glen Elder and Tipton with seven schools and 385 kids located in 411 square miles. Waconda students make up .01 percent of the Kansas public school students, and won 6% of the state's awards. The students at District 272 have begun a proven tradition of excellence when you look at The Global Report Card that was developed by the George W. Bush Institute's Education Reform Initiative. Although the data on the website only shows scores through 2007, superintendent Jeff Travis has said that their scores over the last 4 years are still that good, and have even gotten slightly better. In 2010 Waconda students scored 2nd in math and 18th in reading throughout the nation. And to make it even more impressive, they rank in the top 90 percent for both subjects against 25 other developed countries in the world.
Downs, KS

All of these statistics sound very impressive, but if you ask Travis how they have done it, he would say hard work and a supportive community. "We have really small class sizes in pre-K to third grade - on purpose. The board has made that a priority," stated TravisIt is hard to fathom that a district where two-thirds of its students qualify for free or reduced lunches could have the resources to educate these students in order to produce such phenomenal scores. Travis also said that most students in his district do not realize they are materially deprived because there is a difference between rural and urban poverty. Travis clarifies, "There is a big difference in the needs. If a kid needs it, our community makes sure he or she gets it. The school and community pull together to help cover basic needs. Our kids do not go without because people simply will not let them."

Glen Elder, KS
Something the community is struggling with is the fact that these students are not coming back to the area once they have graduated from college. They tend to gravitate toward Kansas City where there is a more active lifestyle. This is something many rural Kansas towns are struggling with, but Waconda is hoping to encourage these students to come back with a program they implemented about four years ago. They ask kids to design a small business plan for the area that they feel would be successful. Travis stated that the most popular ones involve opening a Bar & Grill, hunting lodge or developing the Waconda Lake in Glen Elder. "My hope is that by the time these kids are thirty and have lived in a more urban area, they will be ready to come back home to raise their family and
Tipton, KS
discover that they have a way to do that with their business plans," said Travis.

Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC would like to congratulate the entire district at Waconda on their huge success. What they are doing is clearly working and is such a great display of communities in the state of Kansas pulling together to take care of one another.

Putting Vision into Action
11/30/2011

As “The Paradigm Man,” Joel Barker says, “Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision is simply passing the time. Action with Vision is making a positive difference.” You can apply this mantra to pretty much anything, but let’s focus on Barker’s primary intent, your business.

“Vision without action is a dream.” In applying this to your business, ask yourself, “Why did I decide to go into business?” Odds are you had a true passion for something and decided to live that passion. You should be passionate about what you do, and that is a great reason to start a business, but then what? In order to be successful, you must have an action plan and defined purpose. Of course the purpose is to enjoy what you do and hopefully make some money, but how are you going to get there? Who are you going to take with you, and do they share the same vision as you?

“Action without vision is simply passing the time.” Owning or managing a business keeps you busy. It is easy to get caught up in the day to day and never take a step back to look at the big picture. Do not confuse activity with progress. It is like taking a drive without a map. It might be adventurous at times, but even if you have a destination in mind, how do you know when you are getting close? How long do you want to drive in circles?

“Action with Vision is making a positive difference.” Simply put, once you layout a road map to help you with your dream, it makes it much easier to get where you want to be. Strategic Planning is an effective way to make this happen. Even if you already have realistic goals and a plan in place, there are so many opportunities you could be missing in order for your organization to really meet its full potential in every area. Companies all over the world, such as Microsoft and Amazon, perform Strategic Planning on a regular basis because external factors that affect your business are constantly changing. You must modify your goals in order to capitalize on the opportunities in front of you.

Strategic Planning provides an opportunity to bring everyone in your organization together and gain valuable insight from those that help make your company run. A facilitator helps to keep the conversation open, yet focused, and allows your organization to develop tactical goals that parallel each person’s individual goals at all levels. This allows for a clearer focus and stronger level of commitment throughout the company, as well as an increase in efficiency and effectiveness. It also helps develop a bridge between staff and executive team members, which may resolve any underlying issues that you may already be experiencing. One of the biggest advantages of Strategic Planning is that it identifies initiatives to help you move forward and assigns ownership to each task along the way to create a system of accountability. Without accountability you are back to where you started, a dream and a destination, but no way to get there.

Sold to the Highest Bidder
12/05/2011

Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC found a fun and unique way to raise money for the McPherson County Community Foundation. Rather than throwing out and recycling some retired laptops, they were sold in a silent auction. SJHL staffers competed for the highest bid to the very last second before the auction closed at noon on November 16th.

MCCF was established in 2001 with the purpose to build charitable endowments and serve donors. Donors are encouraged to create funds that reflect their charitable goals. MCCF makes grants to enhance the quality of life in the community. Grants may benefit youth, education, arts and culture, human services, health care, or other charitable purposes as designated by donors.

The total amount raised through the auction was $615. All proceeds from the laptop sales were then matched by the SJHL partners, making the total contribution to SJHL fund at the MCCF $1,230! Overall, seven staff members won ten laptops. Congratulations to the winners: Carol Caster, Courtney Rierson, Sue Regier, Vicki Courtney, Rick Tuxhorn, Marie Shields and Stephanie Thurman.

Making Your Website Work
12/08/2011

There are not very many businesses left without a website. The Yellow Pages have almost become obsolete, making a web presence vital in order to be found. Now it is time to take this one step further and begin analyzing your website traffic. It may surprise you how easy this is to do and how little time it takes.

Questions you may be asking yourself right now: How do I set that up? What am I analyzing? Will I be able to understand the reporting? There are a variety of ways to view the analytics of your website. Your top three priorities when looking at your website statistics should be 1) Identify what's working; 2) Identify what's not working and 3) Identify ways to improve. Google has a tool that makes Web Analytics pretty easy for just about anyone, even if you are only looking to track how often people use your website. The best news is that for most of the basic features it is FREE.

Setting it Up
In order to get Google Analytics, visit http://www.google.com/analytics/ and sign in with your Google account or create one. Click "Sign Up" and fill out the appropriate information, but be sure to use your websites correct url. Once this is all complete it will allow you to "Ad a tracking code." This gives you an html code to embed anywhere on the homepage of your website. This will not show up visually for your visitors, but it will allow the program to track. (When you sign up the program walks you through it step by step.) If someone else manages your website, they will need to embed the code for you.

The below is a what your "Dashboard" will look like.

When to Use It
Scenario 1:You pay big bucks to have a weekly advertisement in the paper that also gives you space on the newspaper's website. When you are spending money, it is always a best practice to track those results. You may already track this in some fashion by asking clients how they heard about you when they purchase a product or service from you, but sales is not the only aspect of your business you should track. You will want to know if the advertisement was enticing and convinced readers to click on the link and go to your website and whether they bought anything at that time or not. Knowing what generates traffic is just as important as the actual sale.

Google Analytics allows you to track the source of each visit to your website by date. It will show you Facebook referrals, LinkedIn referrals, direct visits, etc. This will show you what percentage of those who view your website come from your ad on the newspaper's website; helping you decide if that is a worthwhile investment. Keep in mind, even if a small percentage of your website hits are coming from that advertisement, it does not mean you should cancel it. Look at all the information because it could be that the advertisement has also contributed to 40% of the sales for that product.

Scenario 2: Perhaps you have a specific campaign you are running for one of your products. You may get a lot of website hits in general from your Facebook page, but how do you know if it was your comment about your new refrigerators that drove them to your website?

The key here is to use a landing page. Meaning, create a page on your website specifically geared for that product or special. Google Analytics will allow you to view how many hits that particular page has and from what sources. Allowing you to see how big of an impact your campaign is really having and which sources are giving you the most traffic.

Scenario 3: It is possible that your website is not currently "mobile device friendly" and you are considering paying to create a "mobile site." First thing you should ask yourself is, "Will it even matter?" The same way Google Analytics shows you your traffic sources, it also shows you mobile device hits and what type of mobile devices your visitors are using. You may discover that out of every 1000 hits, only 3 of those are from a mobile device; thus, not worth the investment. But you may find out the exact opposite and make that project a priority.

Percentage of visits that come from mobile devices.

Which mobile devices are being used.
There are many other tools Google Analytics provides and different ways of reporting, but the above are some basic examples of how you can use this tool to help your business. The possibilities are endless and most of them are free.

Please contact SJHL's Jackie Christiansen at (620) 241-1826 or jchristiansen@sjhl.com if you have any questions or would like more information on setting up analytics.

Hawk Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
12/09/2011

Kyle Hawk Receiving Lifetime Achievement Award
On November 16, 2011, Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd's managing partner Kyle Hawk, CPA, CMAP, was honored for his contributions as a leader in the accounting profession and the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants (KSCPA). At the KSCPA annual meeting Kyle received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the KSCPA, presented to him by the outgoing Chairman John Bruckner. In the history of the KSCPA, they have only given out three of these awards.

The KSCPA is the professional member organization for Kansas CPAs. The Society was founded on October 17, 1932. KSCPA continues to thrive today, adapting over the past 79 years, but always centered with a common vision, core values and strategic objectives.

Kyle has been highly involved with the KSCPA throughout his career. He was chair of the KSCPA from 2006-2007, was the elected AICPA Council representative for the KSCPA from 2008-2011 and is currently a trustee for the KSCPA Educational Foundation. He believes his membership in the KSCPA has created long-term friendships within the profession, knowledge of daily issues, quality representation in front of legislative bodies, networking opportunities and the ability to give back to the profession that has been so good to him.

In addition to the positions listed above, Kyle has also served on the KSCPA board of directors, executive committee, nominations committee (and as chair) and on other numerous task forces. He also served on the board and as president of the Central Chapter of the KSCPA. Kyle became a member of the organization in 1987 and became a partner at SJHL three years later in 1990.

Kyle is also active in the community and other professional associations. Locally, Kyle is the treasurer and past president of the McPherson Industrial Development Co. (MIDC); a member of the McPherson Optimists Club and a member of the United Methodist Church. He also served on the board and as treasurer of the McPherson Chamber of Commerce.

Please help the SJHL staff in congratulating Kyle on this great achievement!

We are Loving It
12/21/2011

In 1940, a Bar-B-Que restaurant opened that would eventually make its mark on the world. That is when Dick and Mac McDonald started McDonalds Bar-B-Que in San Bernardino, CA with car-hop service. The McDonalds restaurant that is more similar to the one we know and love today was founded in 1948 when they shut-down for three months and reopened as a self-service, drive-in restaurant. Their staple menu item was the 15 cent hamburger. In 1955, McDonalds finally began making its move across the U.S. and opened up its first franchised location in Des Plaines, IL.

David and Cindy Jennings are the owners of the McPherson, Park City and two Newton locations (one being in Wal Mart) McDonalds. McPherson got its McDonalds in 1976, which was then purchased in 1977 by David's father. The Jennings family has been operating the location ever since. They added the Newton location in 1984, Park City in 1987 and the Newton Wal Mart location around 2001. David visits each store about twice a week to talk with the managers, employees and customers.

Christina Snyder, Cindy Jennings & David Jennings
The Jennings' Organization includes David and Cindy as well as a long-time employee Christina Snyder. Cindy works in the office performing payroll duties and reports, daily deposits, cash sheets, employee records and other daily office duties. Christina has worked for the company 15 years and is the Office Manager. She handles a wide range of responsibilities which include accounting duties, financial reporting, accounts payable and other various reporting and duties.

David's favorite part about his business is the people. This goes hand-in-hand with their strong commitment to taking care of their customers. The first bullet under McDonald's corporate mission is: We place the customer experience at the core of all we do. We are lucky to have operators in McPherson and the surrounding areas that truly take this to heart.

SJHL Staff

The above photo was taken at our annual Christmas lunch. We were happy to have our soon to be staff members from our "coming soon" Hutchinson location with us at the lunch as well. At this lunch, the staff presented the five partners with their gift. In lieu of purchasing gifts for each partner, the staff donated money and performed an act of kindness on the partners' behalf. A family was "adopted" allowing staff to purchase clothes, gift cards and toys for this family with the hope that it will make their holiday season more enjoyable. In addition to adopting this special family, money was donated to four "angels" off a local Angel Tree in McPherson.

Happy New Year
01/09/2012

With a New Year comes reflection on the previous year and looking forward to the one to come. Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC had a very eventful 2011 and we are very much looking forward to 2012 as we have added a new office and new members to our team.

Celebrating 75 Years
We are very proud to announce that 2011 marked our firm's 75 Year Anniversary! Since 1936, Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC has remained a staple in the McPherson community and we intend to continue doing so. This monumental event inspired us to look at ways of improving ourselves. During the summer of 2011 we launched a brand new website at www.sjhl.com and performed a Firm Summit where we set goals for the coming year.

Best Accounting Firms to Work for 2011
Some more exciting news from 2011 is that SJHL won "Best Accounting Firms to Work for" for the fourth year in a row! This is a survey and award program designed by Accounting Today and Best Companies Group to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in the accounting industry. "This award is important to us because so much of it is based on how our employee's feel about working here. We truly are a family and care about each and every person. Our employees are the reason we are successful, and if they really love where they are at and what they are doing, then we are doing something right. This survey also gives us the opportunity to see where we can improve, so that we make positive progress every single year," stated Managing Partner, Kyle Hawk.

Although last year was wonderful for SJHL, we are even more excited about 2012. Due to a merger with BSE, LLC we are happy to have three new staff members, a Hutchinson office location and many new clients who are receiving their first E-Newsletter today! We welcome Steve Seltzer, CPA; Diane Lee, CPA, CSEP and Darlene Otis to the SJHL team. Steve and Diane had both been with BSE for over 36 years and Darlene for 23 years. We are all very excited about what this merger means for our staff and clients and welcome all the new faces!

Yoga Studio in McPherson
01/13/2012

McPherson's Main Street is already pretty special with a community dedicated to keeping it revitalized. What makes Main Street and McPherson even more special is that it has its very own yoga studio. On the east side of the 200 block of Main Street you will see a section of purple. This is where you will find Whole Body Health, where Darsha Whorton provides massage therapy services and Kelli Dossett teaches yoga.

Twelve years ago Kelli began taking yoga classes at the local YMCA and became a self-proclaimed "Yoga Nerd." You do not actually have to be certified to become a yoga instructor, but Kelli's passion pushed her to learn more. In December 2009 she completed her 200 hours of training and became a registered yoga teacher. Kelli works full-time as a Reading Specialist at Lincoln Elementary School, where she has worked for 28 years, so her dreams of being a yoga instructor would have to wait a few years until she retired. She was pleasantly surprised when she realized there was a way she could do both. Darsha Whorton is a certified massage therapist and decided to open up Whole Body Health on McPherson's Main Street. The space was large enough and perfect for a yoga studio as well. Darsha allowed Kelli to fulfill her dream almost three years before she expected. Darsha owns the building and did all of the remodeling, and Kelli pays her rent to utilize the yoga studio. It is a win-win situation.

There are many benefits to the practice of yoga. Yoga is really great to incorporate into your workout schedule, especially if you are pretty athletic or run often. It helps to stretch out those muscles you work over and over again and can even enhance your other activities. And as you may have guessed, it also increases flexibility. Kelli stated, "I have never been really flexible, and I am still not, but I am far more flexible now than I was at 22 years old." It is also great for relieving tension and helping with pain due to injury. Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd's Wellness Task Force set up a private yoga session with Kelli, and managing partner Kyle Hawk was in attendance. Hawk stated, "I cannot imagine anybody who would not benefit from doing yoga. After only one class, I woke up the next morning for the first time in months with no back pain. I was genuinely amazed and also encouraged at what yoga could do for me."

Kelli provides all equipment necessary for practicing yoga.
There are many inaccurate preconceived notions about the practice of yoga. Kelli said that she hears many people believe it is a form of religion, which is completely not true. It can be used as a "philosophy," but does not have to be and is not practiced at Kelli's studio in this way. It is simply taught as a form of exercise and wellness, as well as an excuse to meet new people.

If you are interested in trying out yoga, Kelli offers classes Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays during the school year. She has a beginners class every Monday at 7:00 p.m. Classes are only $5, or $20 if you buy a package of 5. She provides all of the equipment necessary, such as mats and blocks, for free! In the summer she offers kids yoga and additional class times. Visit her website at http://yogaatwholebodyhealth.intuitwebsites.com/ or her Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Yoga-at-Whole-Body-Health/131364256957297 for more information. You can also contact Darsha Whorton to schedule a massage at (620) 245-0608 or Wildcat_100@hotmail.com.

Get Financially Fit in the New Year
02/01/2012

The beginning of a new year often brings a feeling of change and a need to get organized. We tell ourselves we will do things differently this year, but the key is actually putting together a plan and sticking to it. Here are a few things you can do to prepare financially for the New Year.

  1. Build a budget. Start with your monthly take home pay, and then pull out your last three months of bank and credit card statements. Review them for what you have actually been spending on a monthly basis. This can either be a very enlightening process for you, or it may be very scary. I recommend that you keep an open mind and work with your spouse to devise a workable budget that also takes into account a debt reduction plan.
  2. Check your credit. Running your credit report on at least an annual basis has a number of benefits. It gives you an opportunity to take inventory of your debt, where it is coming from and how much you owe. This can be used as a starting point to come up with a plan for paying down your debt. Running your credit report annually can also be a good way to make sure you have not become a victim of identity theft. You can run a free credit report every year at www.annualcreditreport.com. This is a great service to take advantage of and utilize.
  3. Review your retirement account(s). This is something you may want to do with your plan administrator and/or financial advisor so you have a good understanding of your investment options. It is also a good idea to make sure what you are putting into your account will give you enough to live comfortably on at retirement. And remember, if you have a retirement account through your employer and they offer a match, take them up on it. Everybody likes free money.
  4. Prepare for your 2011 tax return. Organizing your tax information to the best of your ability prior to meeting with your tax preparer will give him or her the opportunity to spend more time thinking about your particular tax situation rather than shuffling through your receipts. Many accountants send out organizers for you to fill out based on your previous year's return. Utilizing these resources can be a big help to your accountant, which will in turn, benefit you in the long run.
It is definitely easier to ignore your personal finances and bury your head in the sand, but the fact of the matter is that you are only delaying the inevitable. It is important that you face your finances head on. I encourage you to take the previously mentioned steps to get you and your family in better financial shape.

Contact Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC if you would like more information on planning your finances. Our contact information for the McPherson office is (620) 241-1826 or (888) 241-1826 and our Hutchinson office is (620) 662-3358 or (888) 414-0123.

Kansas Celebration Quilt
02/03/2012

January 2011, Kansas celebrated 150 years. It was at that time the McPherson Museum and Arts Foundation launched a memorial quilt project to commemorate the anniversary for the McPherson community. This project would take a year to complete, and some very dedicated people's hard work. The quilt was displayed Sunday, January 29, 2012 on Kansas' 151st birthday at Stitches Quilt Shop on Main Street.
Some of the donor blocks on the quilt.
The quilt's blocks were donated by people, organizations and businesses in the McPherson community. It is meant to be a snapshot of life in McPherson during 2011. The quilt will be shown each year on Kansas Day, or other occasions when appropriate, after the building of the new McPherson Museum that should be complete in 2013. The Museum will preserve the quilt when it is not being shown. The quilt raised more than $5,000 for the Museum.

LaQuita Geis standing with the quilt. There was a dedicated committee ensuring the integrity of the quilt's design. They provided the guidelines and advice to quilt participants to make sure the quilt could be preserved for generations to come. The committee included Janet Yowell, owner of Stitches; Donna Burke, member and representative of the McPherson Quilt Guild; Carla Barber executive director of the McPherson Museum and Arts Foundation; and Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd's very own LaQuita Geis, who is also an avid quilter. Janet, Donna and LaQuita helped create blocks for the quilt while Karin O'Reilly did the quilting and and Bill Snyder with Seams Unlimited did most of the embroidery of the quilt blocks.

Please help us in thanking LaQuita and the rest of those involved in the quilt making process. This unique piece of history will be something we can enjoy for years to come and remind us what life was like here in 2011. It is hard to believe that 2011 will someday be, "so long ago."

Lauryn Unruh & Jamie Hedlund

The front of the salon.
October 2010 brought to life the dreams of Jamie Hedlund, as well as a new hair salon to McPherson. Jamie has been a licensed cosmetologist for over 13 years and has always wanted to be the owner of her very own salon. Once she decided her kids were old enough where she could focus on starting a business, she bit the bullet and Captivate began, "the image you desire."

Captivate is located 1203 S. Main, right next door to Hedlund Electric. Jamie remodeled and decorated the space to be very stylish and welcoming to her customers. (You can view photos of the remodeling project on their Facebook page. See below for more details.) The waiting area is stocked with comfortable seating, a variety of magazines and a Keurig coffee maker, allowing guests to really get comfortable if they have to wait. Now that Jamie owns her own business, she really cherishes the fact that she gets to make her own decisions. And from the looks of the salon and the people constantly coming in and out for appointments, she has done a good job. Jamie stated, "What makes Captivate so special is the laid back atmosphere. Customers are able to build a more personal relationship with Lauryn and myself."
